I recently moved into my first “grown up” apartment after living back at home with my parents for several years. I had gotten rid of anything I bought for any apartments I’d lived in previously and this time around I wanted to buy quality items, not just the cheapest available. I was basically starting from scratch with nothing more than a bed so I had a lot to get and was afraid I would miss something so I made a checklist of anything and everything I could possibly need and what I know I use often and wanted to have on hand. I wanted to have these items ahead of time so I wasn’t making constant trips to the store every time I needed a new household item.
You may not need all of the items on the list and there may be other items you find you need to add, but this about covers the bare minimum of what you would want to comfortably start out in your new apartment. It’s a long list and can seem like it will add up, but a lot of the big items can be bought used or let family and friends know you’re moving and you’re likely to score free stuff that they were already getting rid of! I got a beautiful dining room table off of Craig’s List, bought couches off of a friend, and inherited a coffee table and TV stand from my brother and his fiancé.
