With all the sugar that goes around on Valentine’s Day, I wanted to create a Valentine’s Day treat that’s not sweet! These heart-shaped caprese skewers snack are sure to please wherever you serve them and will be a welcome change from all the cookies, chocolates and conversation hearts you’ll see come February 14th. Not to mention, they are extremely easy to make! I served these at a work Valentine’s Day party and was able to quickly put them together the morning of. I got so many compliments on how delicious they were and everyone loved having something to snack on that wasn’t full of sugar.
Heart-Shaped Caprese Skewers
- Cherry or grape tomatoes
- Mini fresh mozzarella cheese balls (I use the pre-marinated mozzarella balls from Trader Joe’s)
- Fresh basil leaves, cut in half if large
Cut tomatoes in half horizontally at a diagonal. Flip one of the tomato halves around and put the halves back together to create a heart shape. Thread the tomato halves onto the toothpick, followed by a basil leaf and mozzarella ball. Drizzle assembled skewers with leftover marinade (optional).
Note: If you can’t find pre-marinated mozzarella balls, you can easily season these with olive oil, balsamic vinegar, salt and pepper.
