In our endlessly busy lives it can be hard to stay dedicated to a workout routine and often it’s the first thing we nix when things get too crazy. But, in all reality, working out should be the one thing you never give up. It’s an excellent stress reliever and it will only help you handle the craziness life throws at you. Here are 5 tips that help me always stay on track and stay motivated to exercise regularly.
1. Make Sure You Always Have Good Music to Listen To
Music is one of the BIGGEST things for me when I work out. I can always tell when I need new music because I also start to feel less excited about going to the gym and less amped while working out once I’m there. Download some new music. Find a new Pandora station. New and exciting music will get you excited and re-motivated to work out. Whatever genre it is, find something to get your endorphins going and your blood flowing.
2. Change Up Your Workouts
If you’re starting to lose motivation, you’re likely getting bored of your workouts. Not only is switching up your workouts good in preventing you from becoming bored, but it’s also good because it helps to keep your muscles engaged. Look for new workouts online, try new classes if your gym offers them, change the type of cardio you do, or even just switch up your workout split.
3. Schedule Working Out into Your Day and Make it a Habit
Schedule the gym into your day just like you schedule your lunch. Stop making excuses like you’re too tired or you don’t have time. Once it becomes routine, you won’t even give it a second thought when it comes time to go to the gym. It will just be a matter of this is what comes next in my day. For me, I always go to the gym after work. I bring my gym bag with me in the car and head straight to the gym when I’m off work. It’s never a question of “Do I want to go to the gym today?” It’s just what I do. Turn going into the gym into a habit and it will become much, much easier to stay motivated and stay consistent.
4. Work Out in Clothes that Make You Feel Good About Yourself
Your closet of workout clothes doesn’t have to be filled with expensive brands like lululemon or Nike to make you feel good, but it is important to work out in clothes that make you feel cute, make you feel strong, and just make you feel good about yourself in general. Target and Forever 21 are some of my favorite places to shop for inexpensive workout clothes. When you’re looking at yourself in the mirror as you do those bicep curls, you want to see someone you’re proud of and that’s hard to do in a baggy t-shirt and some sweatpants. We often think we shouldn’t waste money on workout clothes that are just going to get all sweaty, yet we rationalize splurging on a dress that we might wear once for a night out. Just like you’re excited to go out and wear that dress, you’ll get excited about wearing your workout clothes and heading to the gym. And you’ll wear your workout clothes every day! Treat yourself to some workout clothes you love and it’s hard not to get motivated!
5. Take a Break When You Need It
Yep, you read that right! Sometimes our body and our mind just need a break from the gym. When you’re working out 4-6 days a week every week it can get tiring for both your body and your mind and sometimes you just need a break, even for just a couple days. Whenever I find myself hitting a block, sometimes I just give myself a break. Don’t feel guilty about it either. Enjoy that rest time. Then when it’s time to get back at it, you’ll be refreshed both mentally and physically and ready to hit the gym 100 times harder.
